Perfect wheatear conditions welcome the pilots of the ESS last weekend for the 5th round of the championship this time in Oschersleben in the Magedegurg Börde area. 17 2 cylinder superkarts in division 1 and 4 pilots in the single cylinder superkart divison 2 meet at the 3,7km long tiny circuit. The low grid was caused due to the unlucky date of the event due the start of the CIK-FIA European championship next week at Snetterton where some of the drivers do not want take any risk just one week before. That is a shame due the ESS organizers announced their dates quite early end of 2012 to give all drivers a good planning. But unlucky the FIA-CIK took their position to place their date to their favor. But also when the grid was not as high as usually – around 35 starters – the show of the "Preis der Satdt Magdeburg" was still entertaining.
The leader of the championship Marcel Maasmann decided due the theoretical risk to cancel his start at Oschersleben. The same decision made 4th place Czech driver Adam Kout. So it was 2nd placed driver Daniel Hentschel who start the weekend as favorite for the 2 races. For him it was also his home race and friends and family join his short trip up from Elstra close to Dresden.
He took this role after qualifying where he was more than 1 second faster on his Anderson / DEA superkart ahead of old hand British driver David Harvey (Anderson / FPE) and also good performing David Pickl ( Anderson / BRC) and Andreas Jost ( Anderson / PVP). Behind them on 5th place in qualifying was 3rd placed driver in the championship Guido Kleinemeyer (PVP / DEA)
In Division 2 it was Helmut Dutz jr on his PVP / GASGAS who took pole position ahead of Martin Reuck with his Anderson / GASGAS.
After the start of the first race it looks like controlled run for Hentschel who took immediately a 3 second lead. But after a short while he faced engine trouble and 2 laps before the end he also had an issue with his rear axle so he has to stop his race in the pitlane.
So it was Andreas Jost who took the lead after he was involved in a start accident where he lost some places and took the lead after a short battle against Hentschel in lap 5 of 14. He confirmed his strong performance also with the fastest race lap with 1.27.201min. A top result again for the championship went to David Harvey with 2nd place who has a very constant and strong run in the moment after he fought back against David Pickl who took the last step on the podium for the first race. A strong debut of the new VM engine showed Dutch driver Danny Bleek who took the 4th place ahead of Jürgen Reinke on 5th who just overtook Guido Kleinemeyer in the last lap who took 6th place than and who was unhappy about his set up on his superkart
Helmut Dutz jr. was the man in the single cylinder class where he took a controlled victory ahead of Martin Reuck and Helmutz Dutz sr.
After the disappointment in the first run Daniel Hentschel was looking ahead to take the championship lead away from Maasmann. This time the technic played ok and straight after the start he took the lead and build up a gap of ~2,5 seconds. This time it was David Pickle who also showed ambitions for victory and with very strong laptimes and after he passed his competitors he tried to reduce the gap to Hentschel. 0,5 seconds was the closest gap the timekeepers showed but then it was Hentschel who had some reserves and increased the gap again and Pickle gave up and went no risk an took the second place. So Hentschel took the 3rd victory of the season and also the lead of the championship. What a good motivation for the CIK-FIA European championship next week.
In Division 2 Martin Reuck tried hard to fight against Helmutz Dutz jr. for the win but again some technical trouble hit his superkart and Reuck had to retire. So Dutz jr. won ahead of his dad and 3rd placed driver Ivo Meichsner.
7 drivers of the European Superkart Series will make the trip to Snetterton coming weekend to drive for points and honors in the CIK-FIA European championship. A handful of drivers are able for victory and great racing is expected for the weekend in the middle of England.
The next event of the ESS will be held on the great historic Red Bull ring in Austria on the 24./25. of August before the series will held their final in Assen (NL) on the 19./20. October.
