Gavin Bennett (Anderson/FPE) completed an excellent season with an easy victory in the USKGP at the Virginia International Raceway. Not only that, his time of 2.35.552 shattered the outright lap record at the famous circuit, eclipsing the efforts of numerous other classes that have driven here.Beaten by Trevor Roberts (Anderson/PVP) in the B final, Bennett quickly jumped into the lead at the start but Roberts briefly got his nose in front. However he ran wide wide at turn 2 and Bennett was into the lead he never relinquished. H e pulled steadily clear of the chasing pack to win by a margin of 20.47 secs. Trevor Roberts seized his motor at the end of lap 2, Bennetts most likely treat was extinquished. Sam Zavaglia (Stockman/Honda) the Australian Champion was very solid for his runners up position. J R Osborn drove a strong race to finish fourth on track and a podium place in the 250 twin class. Third on track was American Andy Kiker (Anderson/Gas Gas) who won the 250 single cylinder class by a mile. It was a wholly successful weekend for Bennett but a bitter disappointment for the 1995 World Champion Trevor Roberts who had been supremely swift in the preliminaries and took victory over Bennett in the very wet pre-final on Saturday. German drivers Martin Reuck (250 single) and Jurgen Reinke (250 twin) both went well in the early stages but neither finished the final. Gavin Bennett will not compete in the race winning kart ever again. Shortly after the podium ceremony he was made an offer he couldn’t refuse and the kart was sold to American racer Larry Kurpiewski there and then. After the race Gavin was naturally pleased and said "I am thrilled to win my first race outside Europe and on such a fabulous circuit as the VIR. What a way to end a great year, I have so many people to thank but me Dad, Russell Anderson and Uncle Roy will do for starters I guess".
