Superkart was created in Great Britain in the 70’s, before it was introduced to the European Northern countries, USA, South Africa and Australia.
Due to that the international federation (CIK/FIA) started to organise international championships. France don’t resist as more to the call of Superkart.
The first French champion was Michel Trollé in 1982. Then Eric Gassin, who built its own chassis “ Nissag ” with his father Alex, dominated the category. He then became in 1987 the first French World Champion in kart racing.
Today the Superkart is still showing its specificity, at mid –road between classic go-kart, from which he takes the technical aspect, and automotive racing which it cross on the most prestigious circuits. The Tourism car, GT and single seater cars drivers are often surprised that 250 cc are enough to get the same kind of performances…
Stéphane Daoudi, one of the best French Tourism car racer , huge expert in Racing Porsche driving , made a real test of a Superkart in 2003. He did finish second at Dijon ! Here are his feelings after the race :
« I must say that my thinking about Superkart has changed a lot. It is not a racing car, a go-kart or an hybrid vehicle. It has nothing to get from others categories and represent for sure the best sensation cost ratio. It is a full category by itself. You should tell everyone that it is very fast, it is very physical and not easy and it is 100 % “big balls” !!. To resume: Racing as we all love. The Superkart looks safe too cause they are racing on car tracks and therefore the gravel traps are big enough versus their braking capabilities in case of accident. Which vehicle allows 170 kph mean by lap and to brake 60 meters before the corners at Dijon ? I suggest the ones who are hesitating to try one it ! I did it and I will never forget ! »
